Many entrepreneurs look for follow-up and / or sale of their life’s work. No problem, you might think. On the other hand, companies, banks and investors are struggling to find good opportunities to spent their money. There are all sorts of new financing possibilities coming up. Enough money waiting for a new entrepreneurial destination.
What is the core of the problem?
In conversation with those entrepreneurs you notice often how deeply emotionally involved they are with their company; it really is their life’s work. Their heart is with the business and with the people they often work with for many years. If succession within the family is not possible, what should you do? For every entrepreneur there is a time to say goodbye, sometimes at an advanced age, sometimes much earlier to spend time on other things.
Money is important, but not always decisive. Entrepreneurs like to see their company and employees end up in good hands. This is a matter of people. Who are the people behind the company considering a takeover bid? What kind of personality does your intended successor have? What interests and goals do they have, also in the longer term? With you, your company and your people?
Exactly this is the core of the problem! There is a great shortage of employees in general. It is even far more difficult to find the right match for your company and your personal follow-up.
In order to have confidence in the future, to announce in due time your departure to your people, it is crucial to think about your (gradual) departure in time. Make timely plans, speak to parties and people who can play a role in your future exit. Often a project of years, not least in the emotion of the entrepreneur himself.
